Why “My Lemonade Stand”? What do you imagine when you hear about mental health or mental illness? Thankfully mental health is becoming more recognized and discussed today, but there is still so much to learn and understand. There is still a stigma that people shy away from that needs to be broken down. From young ages we go to well-child exams to make sure our bodies are developing and growing healthy. Our brains, even our emotions, need the same attention and care.
I’ve struggled with severe anxiety and separation anxiety my whole life. It all began at birth. I shouldn’t have survived. The nurses and doctor told my mom that I was septic and critical, there was no hope, but here I am. My brother has depression and was just diagnosed with ADD. As we learn how to deal with it and coping techniques our mom created this forum and opportunity for us to deal with our mental health while inspiring others. Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of or try and hide. It makes each of us who we are and can help us be compassionate. It takes focus, acknowledgment and hard work and with this we can become stronger.
My mom works with each of us daily and helps us learn coping mechanisms. I thought I had it all figured out, but in 2017 I had several big events, including evacuation from our home, due to fire, that intensified my anxiety and we had to find outside help. It was hard for me to trust someone. It takes time and trust, but it is all worth it. It will be a lifetime challenge, but I’ve found that being creative and making gifts for others helps me not just forget about myself, but creating things releases the happy chemical in my brain. My brothers and I love making gifts for people and this is how My Lemonade Stand came to be. “When life gives you lemons,..." get creative and make something sweet!
Spending time with an activity that you enjoy can improve your mental health and wellbeing. It makes you feel happier and more relaxed.
We grew up serving others and in our community. We have combined both
creating and sharing in one place.
We started a Points 2 Pennies program to help with mental health awareness.
With each dollar spent each transaction will earn points. At the end of the quarter (get it...$0.25) these points will be donated. We will give 25 pennies for each point to a charity that focuses on mental health. Each quarter we will be on the lookout for organizations that are in need of extra help, and the donations will rotate. We hope to provide more exposure to mental health awareness and help more groups.
We also want to use our Lemonade Stand to help other youth learn business skills. Each quarter we will open up the Lemonade Stand Roundup https://mylemonadestandco.com/lemonade-stand-round-up, youth can sell their items on our site, learn business skills and we will help advertise.
If any youth are selling items to collect for a cause please contact us
and we will set up an area to sell your products.
Check out our service club, https://bestlemonade.club/, for service opportunities or to suggest ways that we can serve. We encourage more youth to get involved.
